Bowel Perforation after Biopsy

A bladder biopsy happens when abnormal cells have been found in a urine sample and it is used as a way of diagnosing bladder cancer. You may have been through several other tests before getting to the bladder biopsy stage. But what happens if something goes wrong? Sometimes your bowel could be perforated (punctured) during the surgery.

We do understand how difficult it must be to be able to understand what has happened and how it happened. What is an already extremely difficult situation has been made more difficult by you sustaining a bowel perforation after biopsy. We can talk to you and help you to decide if you would like to make a claim for compensation.

What problems are caused by a bowel perforation after biopsy?
If you have undergone a bladder biopsy and your bowel has been perforated, there are many complications that will happen as a result. Some of them are:

• Surgical treatment needed to repair perforation
• All the faecal matter needs to be removed, that has leaked from the tear into your abdomen
• There is the potential of very serious infection due to the faecal matter (peritonitis)
• You may need to have a colostomy or ileostomy (bag fitted outside your body connected to either your large or small bowel) to allow your bowel to heal properly

There are some very serious repercussions from a perforated bowel and this is on top of your possible diagnosis of cancer of the bladder. You may also suffer from emotional distress on top of the physical problems and pain you will have gone through.
